Acupuncture is a gentle, safe alternative to artificial induction of labor. Using specific acupuncture points, we gently encourage the body to produce labor hormones and start contractions. At the same time, we are assessing any positional problems or other factors that could be leading to a delay in the start of labor. This treatment can be done also if the membranes have released (water broken) and labor hasn’t yet started or is moving slowly.
Acupuncture may take as little as a few hours to take effect or up to 72 hours and can be done several times in a row if necessary. Herbal medicines, homeopathics or other natural techniques may be recommended to aid this treatment.
The closer you are to passing your “due date,” the more likely this treatment is to work. The treatment is only effective if your body is ready and is not recommended before 39 weeks unless there is a medical reason such as pre-eclampsia or gestational diabetes.
